The aim is to introduce new sleepers within the track to extend it's life until it is relayed in the next year. The sleepers within the panels will remain in the panel when the other sleepers are changed. This is the second weekend of spot sleepering this summer replacing a total of 25 timbers. We historically relied on this method to upgrade the line before we started relays. A relay is far more efficient as as many as 84 sleepers have been changed in a day, using the phases shown in the "Relay" gallery. Despite poor weather 13 sleepers were installed in a day. This was during an operating day and evening, meaning all works had to be at a suitable stage to allow the train to pass. It is much slower than when the line is shut to traffic allowing the dismantling of a large section of track. Sleepers deposited by the trackside ready for installing. We installed 13 in one day. A sleeper installed. For the first time we used an Atlas Cobra petrol packer which eliminated hours of tedious shovel packing. David loads the tools onto the back of his Ford Ranger pickup. All the tools for the day. The weather was not the best during the day. It got worse in late afternoon after Callum and Craig left. This left David and myself to install a further 7 sleepers. This photo was at the end of the day at around 20:30. The Murder Mystery train stopped at the work site at the end of the day. This provided a source of heat and light refreshments. 1. As work progresses on the crane jib, this photo shows progress halfway day 2 of the jib work. 2. An unidentified man hard at work with a needle gun. This made light work of the paint stripping, however the latice jib poses many hard to get areas, which slows down progress. 3. An area of jib ready priming. 4. 1. The smallest and biggest diesel locos on the railway. The Ruston 48 is a small but useful loco, which the carraige and wagon department hope to have use of again soon. 2. The Ruston 48 has been out of action for sometime now, due to gearbox damage. A replacement gearbox was sourced last year and moves are afoot to change the units over. The broken gear box is seen being lifted through the cab - with the roof removed. 3. The empty space, below the cab floor. 4. The gearbox is landed on a trolley. This was the last lift the crane made before major overhaul. Bridge of Dun MPD 27024 head on 27024 side on. 37097 April 2007 - 27024 and 37097 coupled up for air system testing. April 2007 - 37097 controls with the interior painting advancing. Following the dropping of 6 Dogfish of ballast - the stones require to be spread. The middle has been done just leaving the sleeper ends to form a shoulder. Ballast to be spread. 26014 parked on a completed section of photo quality tack. The new sleeper in the place of the final caley chair. We used new screws for this! But loco crews will not see it as they will not be crawling over the track anymore. The relay from the Brechin end - 26014 can be seen in the distance parked at the other end. A satisfying view - upgraded track as far as the eye can see. An action shot. On the move from the brakevan veranda.

A pictorial record of the loading transportation and unloading of the LMS designed 1937 built GUV No. 37907 from Ferryhill shed in Aberdeen to Brechin. The wagon had been used latterly as a stores vehicle at the depot, hence the Denparts ScR identificartion. The depot closed in around 1987 and it had lain in the yard along with a small selection of other wagons including a demountable tank wagon. Some of these made their way to Brechin after this time. Ironically this wagon made a return journey north and is now based at the Royal Deeside Railway, where it will hopefully be restored Thursday 1 March 2007: In Spring 1991. 1. The GUV at Ferryhill. There was no future in the Austin Allegro providing the motive power. 2. A ramp is being built onto the trailer. The Geddes tractor unit is in position ready to tow the wagon onto the trailer. 3. The loading 4. All loaded. An Aberdeen based 08 spins by for a look. The tractor unit is attached. 6. Some skilled driving and the lorry is on the move. Through the streets of Ferryhill. 8. A wagon on a roof rack on the A90? 9. Approaching the station the lorry gate crashes a wedding in St Ninians Square. 10. 27001 pulls the wagon off the trailer. 11. Unfortunately the GUV was never restored at the railway. It was however a useful stores wagon.

Former railway resident 20056 is seen leaving the railway for the final time. This loco has had an exciting life following withdrawl by BR. Following arrival at Brechin it spent time hauling construction trains at the Channel Tunnel project. Following it's return it ran on the railway for a period before being part of a swap deal which brought 26035 to the railway. Since then it has appeared in the railway press back in industrial use - most recently in Corus colours working at a rail mill in Scunthorpe. A productive after life! The Ruston 88 some time in the 1980s prior to repainting. A young (now big) volunteer stands in the doorway - me! Long since scrapped Ruston 88. This loco was aquired from SAI at Aberdeen Harbour in Spring 1986. It was repainted and worked for a period however it was plagued by mechanical troubles and was eventually scrapped as the railway changed direction of diesel motive power favouring larger locos. Another well turned loco class 02 D2866 coupled to 46464. this loco left the railway in the 1995 for the South Yorksire Railway and is now based at Peak Rail The first mainline loco to arrive at the railway, 27001 being loaded at Montrose in spring 1988. The loco is now resident at Bo'ness where it moved to in early 1992. 27001 at Montrose 27001 and Class 02 D2866 outside Brechin shed. 27001 shunting some of the former Johnny Walker box vans at Bridge of Dun. 27001 approaching No.1 point at Bridge of Dun. Long departed class 02 D2866 getting attention in platform 1. It arrived from Arnott Young Ship Breakers, Dalmuir, Glasgow in October 1987 in near working order having being industrial use since withdrawl from BR.

Harlaxton passing the former railway cottages at Bridge of Dun. A photograph no longer possible due to the construction of the domineering diesel shed. Harlaxton at Balwyllo Bridge on the hill out of Bridge of Dun. Austerity No. 6 at Arrat crossing sometime in the 1990s. This photo shows two things the track has been significantly improved since the photo. Conversely the loco has not run on the railway since the late 1990s following its withdrawal for repair by it's owner. An early journey by the Barclay following overhaul. This was a welcome return to steam services, following the enforced diesel services as result of the failure of No. 6. Austerity no. 6 arriving at Brechin. The first repainted coach no. 4674 a great improvement on the previous blue/grey livery it was running in. No. 6 ready to depart Bridge of Dun. This loco returned to steam in 1991 and took over shuttle duties from the Barclay before working full services when the Light Railway Order was granted in May 1992

19 June 2005. 4495 during the early stages of restoration. A selection of box vans owned by various members. Carraige and Wagon director Nigel Vincent hard at work. A challenging restoration project - second time round. This was one of the original coaches to recieve the blood and custard livery in the 90s. Unfortunately as other stock became available it was withdrawn from service and has deteriorated in a siding. However its time has come and is undergoing restoration began in 2005 and is continuing into 2007. The mark 2 coaches. 3 June 2007. Jim Summers and David Lawson have been progressively restoring the bodywork of Jim's BSO. This section was undercoated last week a major milestone. 3 June 2007. There have been many many welding hours put into this coach. Unfortunately I do not have a 17 June 2007 TSO 4495 Is currently under restoration. 17 June 2007. Inside 4495 the seat cushions have been removed to be reupholstered. 17 June 2007. A completed seat. 17 June 2007. This section of the coach is taking shape.
